What Burning Is About

The documentary is about the bushfires that burned across Australia in 2019 and 2020, the season known as Black Summer. What happened is told through the people harmed by the fires, through activists and through scientists, and among the questions the film puts are the conduct of the federal government and of the media, alongside the irreparable damage left by a disaster that spread across the whole country. Eva Orner’s eighty six minute Australian production treats the fires not as a natural event standing on its own but together with climate change, and it does so as openly stated advocacy. It was released in 2021 and continues the directly political register of her earlier documentaries.
