Viktor Khokhryakov What But What If This Is Love? Is About
In Yuli Raizman’s 1961 Soviet film, Ksenya and Boris are in their final year at school when they fall for each other, and their first feeling does not stay hidden from anyone around them. What follows is mockery from classmates, gossip from neighbours and, above all, the crude interference of adults, particularly rigid and self-serving teachers. The film puts the morality of the onlookers on trial rather than the young people’s, and looks for its way out there. It was argued over at length across the Soviet press at the time, and what Raizman had done struck everyone as extraordinarily bold. Zhanna Prokhorenko and Igor Pushkaryov lead, with a young Andrey Mironov in support.
