What The Communist Is About
Vasiliy Gubanov is an ordinary communist. He works on one of the young republic’s most important projects, the building of a power station. By the film’s account he does that work with an effort beyond human strength. The same man also knows how to love with passion. But his life is cut short very early. The account shows the poverty of the years after the civil war together with the work of building. The film raises its hero up in the official language of the period. That elevation is the film’s own view; the account does not question it. Evgeni Urbanski takes the lead in Yuli Raizman’s Soviet film of 1958.
