Dmytro Lozovskyi What Butterfly Vision Is About
Maksym Nakonechnyi’s first feature follows Lilia, a Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance specialist who comes home after months as a prisoner in Donbas. She was raped in captivity and is pregnant; the film states this once and never stages it. What it is actually about is the homecoming and everything that arrives with it: being declared a hero, being placed in front of cameras, the state’s procedures, the expectations waiting in her own apartment. Lilia refuses to be filed away as a victim, and the refusal puts her at odds with almost everyone around her. Nakonechnyi says the idea came to him in 2018, while editing a documentary about Ukrainian women who had fought. It premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2022.
