What Cageman Is About

A young unemployed man is put out of the place he was living. He has nowhere to go and will take anything. He is directed to the Wah Ha, a place where caged homes are run. There he is given a bunk with wire mesh around it. In the same hall are other men who have been there for years. Then the owner of the building announces he will take it back and pull it down. The film shows the days before and after that announcement, the solidarity in the hall and the breaking up of it. The account does not ask for pity; it leaves the people with their own voices. The work was named best film at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 1993. Roy Chiao and Ku Feng appear in Jacob Cheung’s Hong Kong film, completed in 1992.
