Calibre

A thriller set on a hunting trip in Scotland. Two old friends arrive in a small village. Vaughn's father has just died and his wife is pregnant; Marcus arranged the trip to take his mind off it. The villagers accept them, they drink in the pub, and the next morning they go out into the woods. There is an accident. Both panic and choose the easy thing rather than the right one: they hide it. The rest of the film is the consequence. The village is small, everyone knows everyone, and it is quickly noticed that something is missing. As their lies grow, the village quietly closes around them. The strength is that the threat is invisible: nobody says anything directly, everyone is polite, and the tension comes precisely from that. Matt Palmer's first feature. Jack Lowden plays Vaughn and Martin McCann plays Marcus. It was shown directly on a streaming service. A tight example for anyone who likes slowly built tension and films about moral impasse. Before you watch, know this: the event at the centre is very hard and the narrative lightens it nowhere.
