Times and Winds

A poor Anatolian village with rock behind it and the sea in front. The day is divided into five calls to prayer and everything happens inside those divisions. Three children come forward: Ömer, the imam's son, wants his father dead and, when prayer fails to produce it, starts looking for other methods; Yakup is in love with his teacher until he catches his father watching her and arrives at the same thought; Yıldız tries to keep up with school and with the housework her mother loads onto her. Reha Erdem does not present childhood as a period of innocence; anger, guilt and curiosity are all present at once. The music is by Arvo Pärt. The film won both best Turkish film and the FIPRESCI prize at the Istanbul Film Festival.
