What My Only Sunshine Is About

Hayat is fourteen and lives with her father and bedridden grandfather in a patched-together wooden house at the mouth of a stream where it meets the Bosphorus. Her father fishes from a small boat and takes on work that is not always legal. The most photographed water in Istanbul runs right past a poverty nobody looks at. Reha Erdem builds the film out of what the girl hears and sees: water, ships' horns, breathing. The adult world around her is not remotely safe, and the film makes that felt without showing much of it. Elit İşcan is at the centre of it, and what the film is really about is the child's refusal to be broken by any of it.
