Oh, Moon!

Yekta, around twelve, lives in an old waterside mansion in Hisar with her aunt and her grandfather. The aunt cannot separate herself from either the house or its customs. Another aunt, who lives on an island and teaches English, wants to pull Yekta out of this closed life. Yekta will not go, because she believes her mother will come back to the house one day. It was Reha Erdem's first film, and it is not a realist account of childhood: dreams, their interpretations and a story about a seagull with a child's head work their way into it, with Vivaldi over the top. It played at Locarno, Moscow and Vancouver, and it still stands on its own in Turkish cinema.
