What California Typewriter Is About
There is a small repair shop in Berkeley called California Typewriter, where the owner and his repairman make a living fixing machines and lose customers every year. The documentary gathers around that shop the people who have stayed with typewriters: collectors, writers, repairers and those who simply refuse to give theirs up. Tom Hanks talks about his collection, Sam Shepard and the historian David McCullough about why they still write on one, John Mayer about why a screen scatters his attention. Doug Nichol's 2017 film is not selling nostalgia; what it is really asking is how a tool changes the way a person thinks. It is one of the last things Sam Shepard appeared in.
