What Call Her Ganda Is About
The documentary is about the case that followed the killing of Jennifer Laude, a Filipina trans woman, by a United States Marine. Three women closely involved with the case, an activist lawyer, a transgender journalist and Jennifer’s mother, turn the search for justice into a political movement. The film takes the event not as a single murder but together with the American military presence in the Philippines and its consequences in law. The account does not reduce Jennifer to a story of victimhood; her name, her life and her family stand at the centre. How violence against trans people is met before the law is the film’s real subject. PJ Raval’s ninety three minute documentary was completed in 2018.
