Calle Malaga

Calle Málaga, directed by Maryam Touzani, who co-wrote the screenplay with her husband Nabil Ayouch, is a Moroccan-French-Spanish co-production starring Carmen Maura, the iconic actress from Pedro Almodóvar's classic era. The film follows an elderly Spanish woman who has lived in Tangier for forty years, fighting to stay in the city that shaped her when her daughter, arriving from Madrid, tries to move her into a care home. It's Touzani's first film made in Spanish, a choice tied to her desire to maintain a connection with her mother, who died in 2023. The film premiered in Venice's new Venezia Spotlight section on August 29, 2025, winning the Audience Award; it is Morocco's official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 2026 Academy Awards. The film holds a 97 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Who it's for: anyone curious about a Moroccan film starring Almodóvar's legendary muse, made in tribute to a director's own late mother, winner of the Audience Award at Venice. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a French or Arabic production like the director's earlier films, since this is Touzani's first film made in Spanish.
