What Canvas Is About
In a family in Florida the mother, Mary, has paranoid schizophrenia, her condition worsens and she has to go into hospital; the father John and the son Chris are left to deal both with her absence and with the distance between the two of them. The father sets about building the sailboat in the yard, while the boy tells nobody what he goes through at school because of his mother. Joseph Greco’s hundred and one minute American film draws on his own childhood. Marcia Gay Harden plays Mary, Joe Pantoliano plays John and Devon Gearhart plays Chris. It was completed in 2006 and tells the illness not as an event but as a weight the family carries together.
