What The Snake Pit Is About
Virginia finds herself in a mental hospital with no memory of arriving there. She is inside her delusions and cannot even recognise her husband. As her doctor works towards the root of the illness, flashbacks open up events in her life. Olivia de Havilland played Virginia and was Oscar-nominated for it. Anatole Litvak directed. It is adapted from Mary Jane Ward's book about her own time in an institution. Electroshock, water treatments and packed wards are shown plainly, and after the film several American states changed their mental health laws.
