What Castle on the Hudson Is About
A hardened criminal who believes nothing can change him enters the great prison by the river. There he comes up against a warden who is on the side of reform and who wants to give prisoners opportunity as well as punishment. The struggle between the two is the collision of two different views of how a prison should work. At one point the man is tested by the trust extended to him, and the choice he makes affects both his own life and the order the warden defends. The film belongs to the hard vein of American prison pictures of the forties. John Garfield and Ann Sheridan appear in Anatole Litvak’s seventy seven minute American film, completed in 1940.
