What Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie Is About
Sakura and her friends win a trip to Hong Kong, but the holiday is brief: something out of the past is waiting for them there, and it ties back to an old story involving Clow Reed. Morio Asaka's film is built for people who watched the series, so no relationship is explained. In exchange the animation sits above the series standard, with the water and night sequences noticeably more considered. Its emotional centre is Sakura's inability to name what she feels, and that takes up far more room than the action does. Real streets and temples in Hong Kong are used as backdrop. Who it is for: viewers who know the series and love nineties magical girl anime. Who it is not for: newcomers, since the film explains nothing from the beginning.
