Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal the Movie Part 1

A circus arrives in Tokyo during a total solar eclipse. The Dead Moon Circus is working under cover of the show; what they are after is the Golden Crystal hidden inside people's dreams. Usagi and her friends are at another threshold at the same time: they are leaving school and their powers are changing too. Chibi-Usa begins speaking in her dreams to a creature called Pegasus. Chiaki Kon directs. The source is the Dream arc of Naoko Takeuchi's manga and the film continues the Sailor Moon Crystal series. It was designed in two parts. The first opened in Japanese cinemas on 8 January 2021 and went out worldwide on Netflix on 3 June 2021. The Dream arc is the section of the manga that gives Chibi-Usa the most room, and the film keeps that; the emotional centre of the narrative is her, not Usagi. The nineties television adaptation handled this material as SuperS but moved a long way from the manga. The Crystal line made a deliberate choice to return to the source, and this film continues it. The drawing and colour are markedly better than the television series, and the transformation sequences in particular were rebuilt at feature scale. Who it is for: viewers following Sailor Moon and anyone who likes post nineties shojo anime. Who it is not for: there are too many characters for a newcomer, the story does not complete on its own, and it does not end without the second part.
