Mabel returns after years to Juchitán, the town she was born in, because her friend Daniela has been murdered and the authorities are not interested in the file. She has to run the investigation herself. Juchitán is a place that socially recognises a third gender, the muxes, and Mabel and Daniela are both muxe. Rather than reduce the killing to thriller material, Rigoberto Pérezcano asks what place it actually holds in the town: being recognised and being protected are not the same thing. It was named best Mexican feature at the Morelia festival in 2014 and later entered the country’s list of its hundred best films.
