What Carrie Is About
The end of the 1890s. Carrie comes to Chicago from the country, young, eager and knowing nothing of the city. First she stays with her nagging sister, then falls back on Charles Drouet, a travelling salesman she met on the way, and becomes his mistress. But the man she actually attaches herself to is another: George Hurstwood, a married restaurant manager. What Hurstwood feels for her costs him his family, his position and his standing. As Carrie rises, he goes down. William Wyler directs, adapting Theodore Dreiser's novel Sister Carrie, with Jennifer Jones as Carrie and Laurence Olivier as Hurstwood. It marked Olivier's return to Hollywood after a long absence. The film did not do well.
