Joaquim Leitão What Cats Don't Have Vertigo Is About
On his eighteenth birthday Jô is thrown out of the house by his father. With nowhere to go he takes refuge on the roof terrace of a Lisbon building, which belongs to Rosa, a seventy-three-year-old retired teacher who has just lost her husband. Instead of calling the police Rosa gives him a place to stay and then an affection he has never had, and an unlikely friendship forms across the distance in age. António-Pedro Vasconcelos sets two kinds of loneliness side by side: one life that has not started yet and one that is nearly over. João Jesus and Maria do Céu Guerra take the leads. In 2015 it won nine Sophia awards from the Portuguese Film Academy, including best film, best director, best actor and best actress.
