What Ceiling Zero Is About
Howard Hawks’s 1936 film takes its title from the aviation term for fog so thick that flying is effectively impossible. James Cagney plays Dizzy Davis, a pilot left over from the war, and Pat O’Brien plays Jake Lee, his old comrade and now the airline’s operations manager. Dizzy swaps a flight with Texas Clark so he can spend the evening with a younger pilot’s girlfriend, and he is not the one who pays for it. The film treats flying not as heroism but as work with death priced into it, and it is generally read as the template for Hawks’s later aviation pictures. Frank Wead, a navy flier turned screenwriter, adapted it from his own Broadway play.
