What Celestial Wives of the Meadow Mari Is About
Twenty three short stories, all of them turning around Mari women: a kind of Decameron suspended between magic and realism. Behind them is Mari El, the republic of this people east of the Volga. The Mari are counted among the last communities in Europe still practising their old pagan religion, and the whole texture of the film comes from those rituals. Aleksey Fedorchenko shot it in the Mari language. It is not a documentary but a chain of tales, treating desire, marriage and death with the same lightness. It premiered at the Rome Film Festival.
