What Angels of Revolution Is About
Five friends, a poet, an actor, a painter, an architect and a primitivist filmmaker, are looking in the young Soviet state for something to answer their hopes. The revolution is rising like a fermenting bottle, and the film does not give the period as a straight historical account: winged service dogs, heart shaped potatoes, cheerful angels, love, executions and births are all folded into one another. The account looks at the distance between the dreams of avant garde artists and what the state demanded. The film does not separate the real from the fabulous and uses that as a method. Its visual construction stands close to painting, with fixed and symmetrical frames. What comes of it is not heroism but a disappointment. Darya Ekamasova plays the lead in Aleksey Fedorchenko’s hundred and five minute Russian film, completed in 2014.
