Chamatkar

Rajiv Mehra's 1992 Indian comedy comes from early in Shah Rukh Khan's career. Sunder, who has lost everything and has nowhere to go, takes shelter in a graveyard and meets a ghost there. The ghost is a murdered man with unfinished business, and only Sunder can see him. They strike a bargain: the ghost will guide him, and he will complete what the ghost left undone. The film exploits every comic possibility in the invisibility of a dead character, with other people seeing Sunder apparently talking to himself as a recurring gag. Naseeruddin Shah carries it as the ghost. Shah Rukh Khan was not yet a star, and his energy here is regarded as an early sample of the manner he would become known for. Who it's for: viewers curious about nineties Indian comedy and Shah Rukh Khan's first films. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a tight script and a consistent tone; the film keeps switching genre.
