What Charlie Chan in Paris Is About
Chan’s trip to Paris looks like a holiday but is really an assignment to break a bond forgery ring. Nardi, the dancer who was to brief him, is killed before she can say much. The case tangles further when Yvette, a banker’s daughter, is wrongly accused of murder, and it comes to a head in a strange pursuit through the Paris sewers. Warner Oland plays Chan again here, and the casting of a white actor in makeup as the Chinese detective is what the series is most objected to for now. The mystery plotting is solid work for its day.
