What Guadalcanal Diary Is About
The landing at Guadalcanal seen through a war correspondent: the days of preparation, the landing itself and the first fighting on the island. The film tells the front through the lives of individual men rather than through strategy, where each of them came from and who they left at home. Lewis Seiler adapted it from the bestselling diary Richard Tregaskis kept during the battle, and it was shot while the war was still running, less than a year after the events. Anthony Quinn, William Bendix and Richard Conte are in the cast. It is openly a morale picture and does not hide it.
