What Crime School Is About
In the slums, young Frankie Warren runs with a rowdy gang and one day ends up on the floor himself in a fight. When the boys refuse in court to say who threw the punch, they are all sent to a reformatory run cruelly by two corrupt guards. Mark Braden, the new deputy commissioner, arrives determined to change things, and his plans may be sabotaged from inside. Humphrey Bogart plays the reformer in Lewis Seiler's film, with the Dead End Kids opposite him. It is a characteristic Warner picture of the thirties: it looks for the source of crime in the institution and the neighbourhood rather than the person, and it makes that case in the language of melodrama.
