What King of Devil's Island Is About
On an island in Norway, a reformatory for boys judged to be troublesome, and a new arrival who refuses to submit. The film does not turn the institution into a monster, which would be easier; it shows how reasonable the arrangement looks from inside, with a governor who believes himself an educator and may genuinely believe it. Snow, ice and grey sea are always in frame, so escape is meaningless before anyone tries. Stellan Skarsgard builds menace without raising his voice. It draws on a real institution, which makes the ending heavier.
