Chasing Chasing Amy

Sav Rodgers's 2023 documentary is about the mark a nineties romantic comedy left on one viewer. Rodgers saw the film at twelve and held onto it while trying to understand his own identity. The documentary turns into an interrogation of that attachment. Rodgers speaks with the film's director and cast, and what its female lead describes produces an unexpectedly troubling picture of how it was made. Rodgers also records his own transition. The narrative neither defends nor rejects the original admiration; it shows that a work can be flawed and can have done someone good at the same time. Who it's for: those who follow queer film history and personal documentary. Who it's not for: viewers who do not know the source film; the documentary discusses it in detail.
