In the days of the Japanese invasion of China, two American opportunists, Jones and his partner Johnny, are travelling across the country to sell oil to the invading army. Jones is indifferent to the suffering around him; on the way to Shanghai he meets Carolyn Grant, a teacher trying to get her students away, and the two clash from the first moment, neither giving an inch. When he witnesses an attack by Japanese soldiers on civilians, the way he sees his customers begins to change.
