What Chronicle of a Boy Alone Is About
Leonardo Favio's 1965 Argentine film follows the escape of Polín, eleven years old and held in a reformatory, and the short time he spends outside. Once free he can find nothing to do; he bathes in the river, wanders, and finally has to go back. It was Favio's first film and is counted among the most important works of Argentine cinema. The story is almost without dialogue; the black and white photography and natural sound bring it close to documentary. Its strength is making institutional violence felt without showing it, and never turning the child's gaze into an appeal for pity. Some scenes are hard to watch and the ending is left closed. Who it's for: viewers interested in Latin American cinema and realist films about childhood. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding content involving institutional violence against children, or wanting plot.
