What Chronicle of My Mother Is About
The bestselling novelist Kosaku Igami has for years made material of his own family, and it is his family who mind it most. When his mother, the strong willed head of the household, is diagnosed with dementia, the writer has to face both the distance his own behaviour created and the resentments left over from his childhood, and as what the mother forgets increases, what her son remembers is unsettled too. Masato Harada’s hundred and nineteen minute Japanese film was adapted from Yasushi Inoue’s autobiographical novel of 1977. Koji Yakusho plays Igami and Kirin Kiki plays the mother, with Aoi Miyazaki in the cast. It was released on 28 April 2012, builds a family story spanning fifteen years at a calm pace and won the special grand prize at the Montreal World Film Festival.
