What Chronicles of a Wandering Saint Is About
Tomas Gomez Bustillo's 2024 Argentine film follows Rita, a pious woman in a small rural town. She wants to raise her standing in the church and decides to stage a miracle by announcing that she has found a statue of a saint believed lost. The idea is the plan not working. While Rita is arranging the miracle something unexpected happens, and from that point the narrative goes somewhere else entirely; the second part turns the comedy of the first into something serious. It is Bustillo's first feature. The cinematography is built on static frames and symmetry; the humour is dry and the pace low. The cast is largely local. Who it's for: those who like Latin American independent cinema and comedy with fantastical elements. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a consistent genre; the film changes register entirely halfway through.
