Chico Bento lives quietly in his village among the fields and guava trees with his friends. Then word arrives that a road will be built on the neighbouring land, and his tree stands where it will pass. The children form a plan to save it and the matter soon has the whole village on its feet. Fernando Fraiha made the film with live actors from Mauricio de Sousa's comic characters, and the screenplay took two years to write. It is built as a children's film but its concern is plain: what the thing called development costs and who pays. Chico is played by eleven-year-old Isaac Amendoim. It was named best children's feature at the Grande Otelo awards in Brazil. Who it is for: viewers who like family films and the Brazilian comic universe.
