Cine Holliúdy

Directed by Halder Gomes, this Brazilian comedy is set in rural Ceará in the 1970s. Francisgleydisson, whose passion for cinema keeps him going, fights to keep his small theater Cine Holliúdy alive as television floods the countryside and threatens his business, while also contending with a local politician who wants to use the venue to gather votes. The film's most distinctive feature is that it was shot entirely in the Ceará dialect, to the point that the producers released it with subtitles within Brazil itself to avoid confusion, opening with a card telling audiences they are about to watch the first national film spoken in Cearensês, which is why the subtitles are there. It became a phenomenon in Ceará, drawing roughly twenty three thousand viewers on its opening weekend from just ten screens, the highest per screen average in Brazil at the time, and reaching one hundred fifty thousand viewers in the region. The project began as a short film in 2004, continued with this feature, spawned a 2018 sequel, and eventually became a multi season television series on TV Globo. Who it's for: Fans of regional Brazilian comedy and movie theater nostalgia who don't mind reading subtitles. Who it's not for: Since much of the humor rides on the Ceará dialect itself, viewers can expect some of it to be lost in translation.
