What O Shaolin do Sertão Is About
Halder Gomes's 2016 Brazilian comedy is set in Ceará, in the country's north-east. Aluízio is devoted to Chinese martial arts films; he believes he is a Shaolin monk, dresses like one and behaves like one. Everyone in town laughs at him. When a retired fighter arrives and starts staging challenges, the distance between Aluízio's imagined world and real combat has to close. The film joins the local humour of north-eastern Brazil to the conventions of Hong Kong action, and the joke comes from how badly the two worlds fit. The accent, the landscape and the daily life of the region are inseparable from it. It became one of the popular examples of regional Brazilian comedy. Who it's for: viewers who like martial arts parody and regional Brazilian comedy. Who it's not for: anyone bothered that the local speech and references largely disappear in translation.
