What Operation Y and Other Shurik's Adventures Is About
Three separate episodes befall a bespectacled, clumsy student: forced labour on a building site, cramming for an exam, and an attempt to stop a warehouse being robbed. The film does not connect the episodes; each finishes on its own and the only thing they share is the character. The comedy comes largely from the silent tradition: chases, falls, misunderstandings. The small absurdities of Soviet daily life stay visible in the background. Leonid Gaidai directed. It was the most watched film of its year in the Soviet Union, and the character continued in later films. Who it's for: those who like classic slapstick. Who it's not for: viewers without the period context; some jokes assume knowledge of Soviet daily life.
