What Kidnapping, Caucasian Style Is About
A naive student travelling in the Caucasus to collect folk customs is manoeuvred into a plan to abduct a bride without understanding what he is part of. Leonid Gaidai's comedy became one of the most rewatched films of the Soviet era, and not only for the jokes: the rhythm is short scenes and hard cuts, closer to cartoon logic than to farce. Its trio of comic villains grew famous independently of the film. Underneath sits a light but genuine question about what gets done in the name of tradition. Some wordplay is lost in translation, though the physical comedy carries.
