What City in Darkness Is About
Charlie Chan is in Paris for a reunion with friends from the First World War, and the city is under nightly blackout in the shadow of the Munich crisis. The murder of a munitions manufacturer who has been selling arms to the enemy pulls Chan into both the killing and the smuggling operation behind it. A city of light sitting in the dark is the setting and the argument at once, and the film is unusually direct about its distrust of appeasement. Herbert I. Leeds directed from a script by Helen Logan and Robert Ellis, Sidney Toler plays Chan, and it opened on 1 December 1939, by which time the war it worries about had already been declared.
