What Clear Skies Is About
Sasha Lvova spends years waiting for the pilot Aleksei Astakhov to come back, refusing to accept that he died at the front. He does come back, but captivity has left a different man: cast out by society and struck off from his profession. Grigoriy Chukhray finished the film in 1961, the year Stalin began to be criticised openly, and looked directly at what was done to returning prisoners of war. It took the main prize at the Moscow festival that year. Through the seventies it was shown neither on television nor in cinemas because of its subject, and was only recovered in the mid-eighties. Evgeniy Urbanskiy and Nina Drobysheva play it.
