What Close to Home Is About
Smadar and Mirit, both eighteen, are assigned to patrol the streets of Jerusalem together during their military service. They are nothing alike in temperament and the initial coldness does not pass quickly, but as the days go on a friendship forms between them. Their own emotional matters, falling in love and breaking up, run on inside the political reality they meet while on patrol, and the line between the work and their lives blurs a little more each day. The ninety eight minute Israeli film by Dalia Hager and Vardit Bilu is regarded as the first production to put the experience of women soldiers at its centre. Smadar Sayar and Naama Schendar star. It premiered at the Jerusalem Film Festival in 2005 and took a prize at the 56th Berlin Film Festival.
