What Closeness Is About
1998, Nalchik. In a Jewish family in the Caucasus, the younger son and his fiancée are taken, and a ransom note arrives in the morning. The sum is so high that the family has to sell its small shop and ask the community for help as well. Most of the weight falls on the daughter, Ilana. Kantemir Balagov's first film, shot in a boxed, narrow square frame. A serious warning: it includes real execution footage filmed in Chechnya, which the characters watch and which is not cut away from. Know what you are walking into.
