In Leningrad in 1945 two women back from the war work at the same hospital. One had left her child with the other while she stayed at the front. The film never shows the war; the narrative takes place entirely afterwards and puts the debt between the two women at the centre. The colour is deliberately suffocating: green and red cover the scenes and leave no sense of escape. Kantemir Balagov directed. He won the directing prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes. A real warning: there is the death of a child, euthanasia, a coerced pregnancy and post-traumatic seizures. It is very hard to watch and contains no relief.
