Majority

Mertkan's life is simple. He runs errands on his father's building sites, hangs around shopping malls with his friends in the evenings, drives about. He does not know what he wants either. Then he meets Gül, who works at a Burger King, and for the first time something is his own. But his father objects to the fact that she is Kurdish. Mertkan does not resist. He bends the moment pressure arrives, folds back into the majority, and carries on down the road his father laid out for him. It is Seren Yüce's first feature. It won the Lion of the Future for a first film at Venice and the best director award at the Antalya Golden Orange. The harshness of the film is not in any single event but in how ordinary the surrender is made to look.
