Colonel Kwiatkowski

It is 1945, the war has just ended and Poland is rubble. Kwiatkowski, an army doctor, operates successfully on Kiziora, a colonel of the UB security service, and is rewarded with a week's leave. He and a friend steal a truck to Warsaw, where in the ruins of his old house he finds Krysia, a neighbour from before the war, and falls for her on the spot. After a brawl with a Russian officer at a ball in the still-standing Polonia hotel, he saves himself by passing as a high-ranking UB colonel. The borrowed uniform turns out to be worth far more than that. Turning up at police stations for 'surprise inspections' and trading on the fear and idleness of the new authorities, he gets a great many political prisoners released. Kazimierz Kutz's film draws on real events, with Marek Kondrat in the lead.
