João Vuvu, a retired widower, spends his days riding the bus through his neighbourhood and talking with old and new acquaintances in the streets of Lisbon; the house he lives in needs work and he cannot manage it on his own. The rhythm of the film is the rhythm of that coming and going: the same route, the same stops, a different encounter each time. This hundred and sixty eight minute Portuguese French co-production, in which the director João César Monteiro plays the part himself, was his last film, and it screened out of competition at Cannes in 2003. It closes on a freeze frame of the director’s own pale blue eye, and Monteiro died the same year.
