In the coastal village of Chellanam near Kochi, old Vavachan Mesthiri dies one night. His son Eeshi promised his father a grand funeral: a band, a coffin, a priest, a feast. But there is no money. Over the following day and a half the preparations turn into a chain of disasters; the priest makes difficulties, relatives argue, the search for a loan goes on, and the body waits. Lijo Jose Pellissery takes death through ritual, debt and standing. The narrative moves constantly between lament and black comedy; the grief is real and everything around it is absurd. The crowd scenes are shot to feel like single takes, with the camera moving among the people. Chemban Vinod Jose plays Eeshi. The film was among the most talked-about Kerala productions of its year. Who it's for: Viewers who like Malayalam cinema, black humour, and community-centred narrative. Who it's not for: The shouting and crowd scenes are dense and the sound design can be tiring. Some of the conflicts are also opaque without knowledge of the local religious and social detail.
