What The Spousals of God Is About
An envoy from God, dressed in military uniform, turns up at João de Deus’ door and makes him a millionaire overnight. He saves a young woman from drowning, becomes her patron, is made a baron, falls in love with a princess and wins her in a card game, and then loses everything and ends up worse off than he began. The film is the last part of the trilogy João César Monteiro built around João de Deus, a character he played himself. Monteiro used him for years as an alter ego people habitually confused with the man, and opened through him a field of provocation aimed at both religion and bourgeois morality, which is why his films sit among the most original and the most contested in Portuguese cinema. The 150-minute work played in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 1999.
