What Come Back, Africa Is About
Zachariah comes to Johannesburg to keep his family and is thrown from one job to the next, losing each of them. The apartheid laws decide where he may go, where he may sleep and what work he may do; for a man without a permit, simply being in the city is already a crime. Lionel Rogosin entered the country in 1959 pretending to be shooting something else and filmed in secret; none of the cast are professionals and most of the scenes are improvised. Sophiatown was recorded just before it was pulled down and a whites-only suburb built in its place. Miriam Makeba also sings in the ninety five minute film; it was completed in 1959.
