On the eve of the second national march on Washington in 1987, the families and friends of people who died of AIDS are sewing panels to add to an enormous memorial quilt. Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman pick six lives out of that sea of names and tell them, cutting in news footage and statistics so that each section closes with the count of how many Americans had been diagnosed and how many had died. Dustin Hoffman narrates and Bobby McFerrin wrote the music. The hardest thing in the film is not the illness but how late the government and the public moved against it. It won the Academy Award for documentary feature in 1989.
